Require some help with new GPU...

Hi,

I am planning to upgrade my graphics card this month, and it seems like a good month to do it with a couple of tasty cards coming out from ATI & Nvidia.

However, being quite new to the custom PC world and only just creating my rig - I need some help with knowing which cards are going to work with my set up.

I currently have:

Asus M2N 570 SLi mobo
AMD x64 2.6Ghz 5000+
4Gb Corsair DDR2 memory
Nvidia 7900 GS GPU
500W Coolermaster PSU

My first choice was the ATI Radeon HD 4870 due to it's amazing ability at a low price. However, after looking in to it my PSU is not on the 'okay' list for this card plus they recommend a PSU of atleast 600W.

Without having to upgrade my PSU, and only spending up to £175-£200, can anyone suggest a similar card that will work with the above rig?

I was looking at the 8800 GTX & 9800 GTX, but you seem to pay more for less when it comes to Nvidia cards against ATI.

Any help would be much appreciated!

lol. even you said yourself you haven't seen benchmark reports of the GTX+ being better than the HD4850. :P

However, my PSU is said to be 'made' for Nvidia GPUs, but I suppose at the end of the day it is the same 6pin 75W connector so it must still work??

I was looking at this one.. BFG GeForce 9800 GTX+ OC 512MB GDDR3

Also, I play FPSs like COD4, UT3, Crysis etc.

What are your thoughts on the GTX+?

I say get the 4850. Usually, if a PSU is 'made' for a certain brand of graphics cards it's just a way for PSU makers to get some extra cash off GPU makers.
 
Thanks for the advice, however being a follower of Nvidia I have opted for the BFG GeForce 9800 GTX+ OC 512MB GDDR3 .

Should be delivered tomorrow @ work - I'll let you know my opinion once installed.

Um... well Nvidia said so themselves stating that it's suppose to give HD4850 a hell of a battle.


and well if he gets the GTX+, he can run SLi on his board.
 
I didn't realise just how big this card is!!

It works brilliantly, with COD4 looking sweeter than ever.

The card is silent, and the fan keeps the GPU effeciently cool while gaming.

Just one hang up though, in Unreal Tournament 3 there is still some glitchy frames when the resolution is high, so I've maxed the detail settings and kept it @ 1074x768.

Very happy with the purchase, and would recommend the 9800 GTX+ to anyone looking for an extremely quiet yet powerful GPU.
