Reseated HD 5970, new mobo, bad performance

Hey Guys,

I recently had to replace my CPU and Mobo for a FX 8350 and Crosshair V Formula Z. When I was finally able to fire up the machine and fire up Final Fantasy XIV I noticed I can still run the game at max settings without crashing but its awful compared to before. Before I would only experience some lag (sometimes) when mass amounts of people were around.. now there can be no one around and it has and awful lag. I've got the latest drivers DLd. What could it be?

Thanks for the help!

Update - I think the right term for it is screen tearing? It looks like frames are being skipped. I NEVER had this problem before and I never had to use VSync either (which isnt working now anyway).

Also, I would like to add.. unlike before. If i wanted update my drivers over my old drivers it had no problem doing so. Now when i do that it freezes my PC in the middle of the update. whats the deal here?

Thanks for the reply.. When i put in the new CPU and the new Mobo the windows i had already was corrupt and wouldnt allow me to repair it. Since i didnt want to lose all my files i put windows on my second hard drive which was basically blank. The old windows is still here i guess but as far as im concerned i have a fresh install. Should I try again? This Frame skipping is driving me nuts!

Ok, im working on it now. The HWinfo64 seems to be a different version. Ill see what i can get going here. WIll post findings soon. THanks!

at idle my cores are at about 12c and GPU is at 53.

Running around in the forest for a few minutes... Frames already appear to be skipping.. but the heat on the CPU is steady at 24-25c and GPU is very slowly heating up.. currently at 74c.

Also, to note... WHen im in some towns full of people there is far less skipping then when i zone to the outside for example

If it goes past 90c, that's a problem. Did you turn VSync on yet? And is FF the only game you get stutter, or are there more?

I only play FF anymore. it hasnt gone over 90c. I turned VSync on last night and it didnt make any difference, I never had to turn it on before so im wondering why i should have to now? Do you think there is a chacne that my hardware is jacked?

Maybe, maybe not. What driver version are you using? And try a different game, if you have any. This is quite important, we need to know if it's just Final Fantasy or all games. Also, the reason for VSync is because the CPU may have made the FPS go up and start tearing.

alright I'm installing Bioshock right now. I was trying to use Radeon Pro to enforce VSync but when i start FF it doesn't display anything and ends up not responding. Any other program you suggest to enforce VSync?

Oh, And i was using 13.4.. Now im using 13.8 Beta 2 with better FFXIV support, still same problem.

As another update, I noticed that in certain areas the game will work perfectly, but its very random areas it seems.

I read somwhere else that this chip being clocked so high could be the problem so i put my PC on power save mode to keep the chip underclocked and it didn't seem to fix the problem.

Update: ran around in Bioshock (the first one) no issues, looked beautiful. My guess is though that Bioshock isn't nearly as resource intensive as FFXIV.

I'm going to see if i can find my left for dead 2 disk and try that out.

L4D2 is not very resource intensive either, try 3DMark or Unigine Heaven. It's normal for a low FPS in those, but if you see any frame tearing like you are getting in FF, that's a problem. Try doing this:
FFXIclopedia said:
Go to Network Connections, select properties under your active connection, and disable QoS Packet Scheduler.
Then try FF again. Also go in task manager, processes (while FF is running) and right click and increase the priority of Final Fantasy to High. You can try Real-Time, but it will probably make it worse.

Hey PCUnicorn,

Thanks again for the help. I looked at your edit and applied the changes. It appears to have made some minor progress maybe? It looked pretty good for the first few minutes when I logged in but it started to stutter again. Reprioritizing however didnt appear to make much of a difference.

I don't think I mentioned this, you might know this already but might be a clue..

I read that somone else underclocked this CPU and it made a difference in performance, not specifically FF performance but just some video game this person was playing. I went to EPU and put my PC on power saving and although its not as smooth as I would like I dont see the stuttering.

Also, I checked out the link. That game is 50 bucks! I checked the internet, there is no available benchmark for that game unless you pay and download the full game it seems.. Also I didnt find a free tiral. Im currently downloading Unigine Heaven. I'll run it when its done and see what happens.

OH, I also wanted to note that I DLd the Asus AI Suite II that came with the Mobo.. I read this was junk, I havnt used it for overclocking as I didn't plan to overclock anyway.. Maybe this is part of the problem? I uninstalled the AI portion of the tool, didn't seem to make a difference.

Grid 2 has a demo. Look below the Buy button. Try disabling the second GPU in CCC and make the 5970 a 5870 and see if maybe CFX was the issue, maybe FF doesn't work with Crossfire?

Edit: Never mind, Grid 2 doesn't have a demo. Don't worry, I wasn't trying to get you to buy a $50 game. This game has a demo:
http://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/202170/
Max it out and see how it runs.

Well i'm playing in windowed mode so I dont think it makes a difference. I'll see if its on though and trun it off. I know that before when i tried to run it in full screen the old verison off FF was terrible with crossfire.

Im running the bench for Unigine right now, and it looks like its running in CF. GPU temps are at 81c and 85c.. Frames are pretty steady at 60FPS.

Just got my score
FPS: 62.3
Score 1570

Min FPS 24.1
Max FPS: 128.0

I'll look for the Demo again for the game and check the CF Settings.

ok, The demo (which I think is also called Demolision Derby) doesnt appear to work unless you have GRID 1 installed which I do not have. If i search GRID 2 DEMO in steam somthing else (it looks like somthign else anyway) comes up but takes me to the same place. When I hit 'See All' under DOanloadable Content for this game, only free thing is Demolition derby pack. When I click that it does nothing. Maybe they took it down? I also did a google search, doesnt seem to be anywhere else to DL it, anywhere credible to my knowledge anyway.

Sorry if im just missing. :/

Also, looking in CCC, everything is different.. Only thing I can find that pertains to CFX is an option to change Frame Pacing OFF or ON. I'll keep looking.

Just saw your edit. Will do now. Thanks
