resetting my new netbook

hey, i've just picked up a netbook for internet use while travelling. its a Sylvania GNET13001 7" Netbook PC but the problem is, having set my username and password it now refuses to acknowledge them. i tried resetting during start up but no good. besides, users have posted threads saying the thing to do with this is uninstall the gos os and replace it with windows xp. i don't have a clue how to do this though. i'm travelling on a tight budget and can't really afford to take it to a repair shop to do. is it easy? can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do it? i sure would appreciate it.

Have you tried this procedure? Found it on the Sylvania website:

Q: I forgot my username and password, how do I log in?

A: 1. Boot up your computer, and when you see the screen that says something like "Press ESC to enter grub," press ESC (the escape key).

2. Now you should see a menu with many options. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the newest kernel (the one with the highest number) that has "(recovery mode)" written next to it. Now, hit enter (return).

3. Next, your system should boot up normally. BUT, you WILL NOT see the boot splash. Don't worry about that. Lots and lots of text WILL fly past you.

4. Next you should see another screen Recovery Mode scroll down to "root Drop to root shell prompt"

5. Type in the following command:

grep x:1000 /etc/passwd | cut -d: -f1

6. It should display back your user name

Don't know if it will help, but worth a try.:D

lol, not like the highly detailed instructions from the manufacturer's website might work, or anything like that!

LOL! Although the info was not the easiest to find. Not much info out there on these, apparently. Heck, I didn't even know Sylvania was selling netbooks. It sure is different looking...
