restart when accesing control panel

I'm working on getting my uncles computer secure, but I have come across a problem. Whenever I try to access control panel it will restart itself. I ran spybot, adaware, and avast but it still does it. It's an emachines desktop. Anyone know what the problem is?

I had a similar problem; when I tried to access the CP, and the icons appeared one by one, explorer would crash just as the icon for ATI appeared. I ended up making shortcuts for the.cpl programs and using those. Problem finally went away after upgrading videocard from a Radeon 7000 to a 9200SE.

Sounds like some conflict. Is it an instant restart or does it wait a bit. If it takes some time, I'd wonder if it's a harddrive problem.

I get the searching icon, then it restarts.

Sounds like a Graphics problem or CPU overheating. Post your specs and OS. Probably can get a better answer.

I guess 16 years experience doesnt mean all that much. In any case, what driver rev do you have?
