Restore disks

I have 2 HPa320n desktop computers that I can't do the restore on. I have been on the chat help line with HP many times and so far I'm nowhere. This all started when I tried to make my own set of disks with their built-in program and when that failed, I wound up buying the disks from HP. When the first set gave me errors and was unable to successfully finish the restore, they sent me another set and they didn't work either.
They first tried to say that the hard drive may be bad but when I told them I was able to install my own version of XP on that same hard drive and that I even tried another hard drive, they bumped me to a higher tech, and they finally left me with their solution that either the mother board or BIOS were bad. It's hard for me to accept that this since I am able to install my own version of XP without a problem. They were going to let me go to one of their repair stations, for a free diagnosis of the board, but then they said they could not do that because the computer was too old. Their tech help was courteous and patient but in the end I still have the problem. Of course, as I said, I can install my own version of XP and make the computer useable but since it came with all those programs I would like to be able to do the restore and that is why I won't try the restore on my other computer. I know this is lengthy, but I tried to give all the information I could to see if I can get any help with this problem. Thanking anyone in advance for any help they may give, I am,

Have you made ANY changes to your hardware from its original configuration? Some PCs need to have all the original hardware in place and operational to permit a restore operation to be successful. Another RAM stick, a second hard drive, removal of the modem, etc. and the whole restore procedure might fail.

This is the precise reason I bought a copy of XP. I made so many hardware changes that using the original restore discs would never work. I had to break down and buy the software that the restore discs had pre-installed, but it was worth it.
