Retrieving information from crashed PC

I'm not really sure if this is the right section to ask this question in.

My laptop recently crashed (most likely, there was something wring with the motherboard) and I have been trying to retrieve my personal documents (pictures, music, etc) in Safe Mode. However, my files don't appear to be there when I boot in Safe Mode and the Desktop arrangement definitely does not look like what I had. All my programs seem to be there, though. I would like to note that the Desktop arrangement being different, in itself, does not bother me. However, it is an indication of something being weird.

Also, when I try to check the space used on my computer, the hard drive seems to be mostly full (as it should be), but the full memory capacity of my computer is NOT what it should be (100GB, instead of 120GB).

Can someone possibly suggest a way to retrieve my information? Note, I can't access my computer the standard way (ie., *not* in Safe Mode) and I am using a PC.

Sounds like when you log into SAFE MODE you arent logging into your profile... meaning you either need to log in with your usual login account or when your logged in SAFE MODE (under administrator i assume) try going to C:\documents and settings\(your user name)\ and then you will see folders for all of your stuff.

If possible take the hard drive out of your laptop and slave it to another PC. There are adapter cables available to do this. You should be able to see all of your files. Another option is to use a USB cable on this drive on another computer. Good Luck.

It's a laptop, btw so this wouldn't be possible or easy.

I don't have a solution atm but if you come to the conclusion that the HDD is corrupted but believe the disks to be intact, you can take it to a local repair shop and they can swap out the disks into an identical hard drive enclosure.

I didn't say it was going to be easy but it certainly is possible to slave the HD to another computer.

if the hdd is sata it might work if its ide you can get a 2.5 inch hdd enclosure for the drive that hooks up usb
