Reusing old HDD in a New Build

Looking to save money and upgrade as budget allows.

The PC I'm replacing has an IDE hard drive. Can I build a new PC on the i7 platform / mobo combo - and use an IDE 80 GB hard drive temporarily and purchase an upgrade HDD with a SATA hard drive later to delay some spending? Or is IDE so dated - that new MOBOs don't support them - or some other reason it would not be advisable?

Thanks

You can but just be aware that if you use the IDE port for your hard drive, you won't have one open for your cd rom drives.

You can put a CD/DVD drive as a slave on the same cable. Depending on the chipset if both have to run at the same speed or not. But there is no reason you can run both on the same cable.

It'll be a whole new setup - and I don't currently have a drive - and I'll need one to install Windows 7. I'll be purchasing that new - I'm assuming that I can just get a SATA DVD R/W Drive and I won't need an IDE connector for my DVD drive.

This is what I was looking at - it's got alot of reviews and seems popular.

Sound good?

That's right. Since IDE is at end of life as a technology, it would make sense to choose a SATA optical drive. Good luck with the build.
