Reverse Hyper-Threading?

There were rumors about that Reverse Hyperthreading was integrated into the new AM2 CPU's, then a member posted a link saying that it's non-exsistant.

Well I just read the latest issue of MaximumPC (September 2006), and this is what they said:

Reverse-Hyper-Threading to Arrive Sooner then Expected?
In July, we speculated that one way AMD might be able to compete with Intel's Conroe CPU is to implement reverse-Hyper-Threading. By having two cores appear to applications as one super-core, multicore CPU's could deliver more performance to single-threaded applications. The latest rumors hint that not only is the tech real, but it's already implemented in AMD's new socket AM2-based CPU's. Even more surprising, it seems Intel might have similar technology embedded in Conroe. An image popped up on the internet of an Intel 975x mobo with a "Core Multiplexing Technology" option available in the BIOS. We contacted both companies about this issue, but neither Intel nor AMD would comment on the rumor.

Thanks for the article Geoff.

What I'm wondering is how did Omega get the September issue when it isn't even August? :P Or am I just missing something.

well as of yet the Reverse Hyper-Threading (Anti-HT) or whatever you want to call it is still a rumour, whispers across the web, a shodowy image cropping up here that could be interpretted in many way.

My gut feeling is that had such a profound option been placed in AM2 then AMD would have told up by now, rather than let this media storm around core 2 continue
Plus with OS's/Games et al all pushing for better use/recognition of multi-cores the technology will soon be useless

Guess we'll just have to wait and see:)

If you susbscribe to their Magazine subscription, you get the issues months in advance. :)

Well, if the Inquirer can be trusted, this is just a rumor...

However, AMD have released a "Dual Core Optimizer"...

I think this is all old stuff though, those articles are from early July.

Oh, by the way, X-Bit Labs has some info on the "Core Multiplexing Technology":

And here is an image, from http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104178, which might explain this:

Not sure how trustworthy it is...

The only way this would work is integrated into the CPU design, or a CPU extension. Software for this just doesn't cut it, like the Dual Core Optimizer. Intel also has this technology ready (i will get a link), so it's not really a big deal. To me, this is nothing more than sacraficing real world performance to get benchmark numbers.

I read about this some time ago and i believe that its a cloak and dagger technique to get intel to react to this technology and make some attempt to make a technology that is technically already obsolete.
If it were true surely AMD would be bigging it up by now considering how "revolutionary" this is meant to be?

Exactly, real world performance sacraficed for benchmarks.
