Revs way up...?

Hey guys,
When I turned on my computer this morning, when it got to the XP Welcome screen, my hard drive was revving way up. It has never really done this before. It lasted for like a minute, and then got normal. Is that a problem, or is that normal for it to do that every once in a while?
Thanks for the help,
Derek

You sure it was the hard drive and not the DVD drive or cpu fan? i know sometimes my Lite-On DVD-ROM drive revs up very fast and its pretty loud, but then it quiets back down in a minute or so.

Actually, I'm not sure if it was the HDD. Now that I think of it, it could have been the fan, in fact, I remember it saying on my AI Booster that the CPU usage was at like 100%. So if it was any of those though, is it normal? Thanks a lot guys,
Derek

EDIT: Hey Geoff, I also have a Lite-On DVD-RW drive, and it could have been that. It has done that before, but not this loud or long.

my processor fan kicks on every time at windows loading.....you can take the panel off the comp tower (if it is a tower) and see if it starts spinning fast....thatll tell you.

or you can look through the window if you have one, its still hard to tell how fast its spinning tho, unless you look at speedfan once xp loads.

Well it only did it once, but if it does it again, I'll take a look at the fan while it's doing it. Thanks a lot guys,
Derek

Funny whirring noises that are very prevalent for a moment or two, then dissapear, are nothing to worry about. Think of that sound as your computer's way of farting or burping: it happens every so often, and it's nto a problem, just that the noise (or, for humans, smell!) can be annoying for a bit. If you start hearing scratching, whining, clicking, or constant beeping, that's when you should worry.

Just so you guys know, it turns out that it was the fan on my case that was revving up. It was caked with dust, and so the mobo tried to speed it up. I took the dust off, flicked it, and it stopped. THanks guys.
