reworking motherboard

hey guys... i got this system from my ffriend from work and i was suppose to repair it... well, i have this issue with the motherboard..

originally it was an issue with his video card not working.. we bought an ATI radeon 9250 and it worked out fine for the first week or so .. but after.. it wouldn't turn on anymore..

the thing is that i have no idea what kind of motherboard it is.. or psu (any way i can check for this, please let me know so i can provide more accurate details).. but from time to time.. i can get it to start up completely and into windows.. everything works out fine.. however, if i restart or shut it off.. it can't start up anymore.. i have to start pushing things on the motherboard around making sure they are securely in (first try doesn't work out.. keep trying n trying) eventually it'll start up again... and then the same thing happens if i restart or shutdown...same thing happens.. i checked cable connections and everything.. switched the bios battery.. i think? the one on the motherboard to a new one.. didn't work.. is this something wrong with the motherboard? cpu? power supply? memory? cables?

I've plugged this program several times previously on this forum. It's excellent. It'll tell you all -- and I do mean ALL -- the information that you'll need on the hardware. (except for maybe the PSU info)

Now, with the computer issues, my mind immediately goes to the PSU. When you say that it sometimes doesn't start, how far does it get into the startup? If it doesn't do anything, then I'd look into the PSU (although it does seem weird that it works fine once you get it going).

Once you let us know precisely what it does when it refuses to start up, I'm sure we'll be able to help much more.

I had a Celeron 400 that had the exact same problem. Sometimes it wouldn't boot up at all, but other times it would boot and work just dandy. Through the testing I did, I found out the problem is either with your motherboard or processor, most likely motherboard.

oh it boots up nicely and works completely ..IF it can turn on.. thats IF.. but other than that.. it wont turn on... i think its an AMD.. once i get it turned on.. i will check out the system details and get the program running on there and will post back up... remember to keep checking on this thread guys.. thanks a lot

Yeah, with my Celeron, I would have problems with when I pressed the power button the machine would do nothing at all.

iirc it's replaced by everest... and in either case, neither will tell you OPNs (granted not many people need to know either)
