Rivarts.A Attack!

Hello there ... our home comuter has fallen victim to a nasy little trojan. It auto-installs a number of things at start-up, including Rivarts.A. I keep deleting it through my anti-spyware, but the next time I reboot, there it is. It also auto-installs some adware that generates pop-ups (some very inappropriate, & my 12-year old daughter saw the first one!) - again, I have erased, but ever time I reboot, there it is. It has killed my task manager, destroyed all of my restore points and generally compromised the speed of my system. I have googled Rivarts.A and it has indicated that it is loaded by something called Downloader.FHO.

Can anyone advise how I can rid my computer of this vicious little beastie & get my task manager back (I assume the restore points are gone for good)?

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Then restart the computer and post a new Hijackthis log.
 
Okay, I installed and ran the trial of Spysweeper as suggested, & it detected a whole bunch of nasties, including "rootkit (sp?)" malware, which I understand makes itself invisible to the system. I got Spysweeper to Terminate what it had detected With Extreme Prejudice, and I have rebooted. Here's the latest HJT report:

It looks like I still have the problem ... my configsys shows that a couple of invaders called OB130C0F131412.exe & pgktraeA are still loading up at boot, my task manager is still missing in action, & Sysweeper told be a BHO tried to start when I initiated IE to post this.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!!

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Download Avenger from here:

Open the program. Check the 'Input script manually' option.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, paste this:

I deleted the other files with another program called Killbox, and Avenger confirmed that it couldn't find them.

Things seem a lot better ... The two .exe files that configsys showed were being added to my start-up routine - OB130C0F131412.exe & pgktraeA - are gone and my task manager is back. However, HJT couldn't delete two of the files you identified ... namely:

Also, Spysweeper is telling me that IEXPLORE.EXE is attempting to install a BHO.

Since my last post, I ran Spysweeper. It didn't report the abundance of nasties that it did before. There were two cookies ... plus this: "System monitor found - potentially rootkit-masked files". I don't know exactly what that is, but it doesn't sound good ...

Run the Avenger.

Open the program. Check the 'Input script manually' option.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, paste this:

Files to delete:
C:\sccfg.sys

and click 'Done'

Click the Traffic Light icon to start the program, and OK the prompts to reboot your PC.

Post the Avenger output.txt, which you can find at C:\Avenger\.txt
 
Okay, I ran Avenger & pasted in the apporpriate text. I got the error message: "Error: Could Not Create Zip File", and then "Error Code: 0". There was no text file in c:\Avenger. I ran it twice, and right after I ran it each time my spyware program indicated a batch file was trying to initiate. In the first base it was C:\mfltudkk.bat, which generated something called mfltudkk.bat, and in the second case it was ouhiybdoq.bat, whcih generated something called chpfinhk.

What did I do wrong??

I'm afraid I may have celebrated too soon. I just ran spysweeper, and it's telling me that c:\sccfg.sys is still there. Anything else I can try?

Regarding sccfg.sys - I googled this little beastie, and there is not much there. One suggestion is that it is generated by a program called Folder Lock, which I happen to have and which I will shortly be uninstalling. Another is that it was part of Sony's DRM scheme. In any event, I understand that renaming it with Blacklight doesn't work because it keeps regenerating itself. One suggestion was to rename it, and then create a directory called sccfg.sys. Since you can't have a file & a folder with the same name, this will keep it from regenerating. I'll be interested to see if uninstalling Folder Lock dissappears it ... I'll try that first, and then blacklight it. I'll report back with the results.
 
I found the same thing myself, just interested to see what what was gonna happen, looks like it'll come back if you got Folder Lock installed.
 
I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or just jump off the CN Tower. I removed Folder Lock ... all good. I figured I'd reboot and then go back in with Blacklight to see if I could erase the rootkit file. I reboot ... and the SOB won't boot up!! It hangs up at the initializing screen, and won't go any further. I managed to start it up in safe mode, but nothing I did seemed to get to boot up in regular mode. So I decided to repair XP with the original installation disk. I begin the instillation process ... and it hangs up with 24 minutes left. Now I can't even get in in safe mode, because its half way through an installation. I have no idea why all of this is happening.

This is doubly frustrating because of all the hard work you put into helping me get rid of the beastie that had infected my machine. Now it looks like somehow I've done even more damage than the bug would have done. So the operation was a success ... but the patient died.

Aaarrrghhh!!!!
