I have Roaqd Runner standard at 7Mbps downloads. My son plays lots of games online, mostly WW. Have been having trouble loosing internet connection. Sometimes loosing partial service sometimes total shutdown. Have used Road Runer customer service several times, doing the things they advise, nothing better. Today after bad service all morning and one shutdown, called Road Runner service. Woman advised me to up my service to 10Mbps. Said for serious gamers 7Mbps wasn't enough would continue to have trouble until I upgraded to 10Mbps. Does this sound like good advice or a sales pitch? I need someone who knows more about this than I do to advise me. At 7Mbps would WW lose partial function or shut down or does it sound like there might be another problem? All help appreciated.
Thank You;

7mb is plenty.. Your service should not be cut off no matter what speed. It should stay somewhat constant. Let us know how you are connected. Dsl, with a router..connected wirelessly? or with an ethernet cable. If you are wireless you may be getting interference fomr somehting wirless.

I have Cable connection with Motorola modum(ethernet) and a Linksys 2.4 router, wire and wireless. The comp games are played on is connecter wired to the router.

When you loose connection how long is it out? How do you get it turned back on? Does restarting the router work? Or is it an ISP thing?

Sometimes when it shuts down the lights on the modum shuts down then restarts, sometimes I have to restart the modum by unplugging it then plugging it back in. It stays off until the modum restarts or I restart it. Usuall a few minutes. The router does not seem to be effected in any way.

So you think it is the Cable connection being lost, not the modem or router breaking the connection?

I would personally log each connection, and after a month call the ISP and complain that your connection is reset/lost too much. (if it is more than 2-3 times). The speed of the line is good, the problem you are facing is having the connection staying ON. Dont buy into the sales pitch, thats all it was.

Maybe consider changing ISP's, if at all possible? I dunno about your ISP, but our sole high-speed ISP out here doesn't give a crap about bad line quality, and shaky connections. They always give the standard "there's nothing wrong on our end, the problem must be on your end" garbage. Even if they do acknowledge intermittent connection problem, there's probably not much they will be willing to do.

how old is it? look at the back? Also try searching for the model to see if other people are getting the same as you..

it's either way the router going bad or the cables outside your house being crappy or the splitter (just had a similar problem with one today and they replace it and fixed the problem lol)

Don't know how old modum is, we have been using several years. It's a Motorola model sb5101. Anyone with same one having trouble with theirs? Pretty sure it's not the cables because we watch tv on the same cables as internet is on. Will check cables anyway.
