Rolling Post on new PC? ... Divorce was simpler

Seriously, Houston we have a problem:eek:

I have a computer on my workbench consisting of the following new parts; my son decided to build a gaming machine and it's not going as planned;

  • ASUS M3N-HT AM2 Mobo
  • AMD Phenom X4 9850 Processor
  • Corsair XM52 PC8500 DDR2 4 gig @ 1066mhz
  • BFG 800watt Power Supply

The trouble? power it on ... extended time before the post beep, sometimes no beep at all. Rolling boot in that it powers on and off over and over while posting. Ocassionally acts like a dead processor - lots of fans, no drive activity. Once in a while it boots to Windows and runs normally.

  • Swapped the MB with a new one; same trouble
  • Swapped the Processor with a new one; same trouble
  • Removed the Dimms ... get the post beeps (expected)
  • Installed just one Dimm; same rolling post
  • Swapped with another Dimm; same symptoms as above
  • Installed them both for 4gig total; same symptoms as above

This testing was done with just the mobo, processor, 1 dimm, and power so I know it's not a peripheral.

So is it (and I never thought I would see the day) possibly power related? is 800watts not enough? I have a 1200watt unit coming but I figured I would ask as maybe somebody ran into this already and could save me any more work. It's going to be a nice box when it turns on and actually STAYS on

Thanks Folks; any input is certainly appreciated so I can put this to bed.

800watts is more than enough but rather than the wattage, you might have a faulty PSU, i'd try to get a different one to rule it out as a concern.

of course RAM can always make stuff freak out, try different RAM sticks.

If you can get into the BIOS make sure your CPU and RAM are at default voltages and clock speed, for testing purposes you could even set a RAM divider and run the RAM at a lower rate.

As a last resort, borrow a different CPU and put it into that mobo.

The whole idea is to rule out each component individually so if you have a replacement for each part, try it.
