Router and Reformating PC!

Hi Guys,

I'm currently running a D-Link Router for my connection in the house, I've got another computer in the house feeding a CAT5 lead for the Local Area Connection from it at the moment, All is working fine at my end and alos the Router is ofcourse set up blah blah,

The problem is my computer is running very very slow and I'm going to do another backup and hopefully reformat the hard drive, My Question is If I do this and Install XP again will my connection still work or will I have to configure the router again or Will it be just as easy as putting the CAT5 lead back into computer and hey alls good?

Thanks,

How hard is it to configure the router? Cant be to hard! There is a setup wizard on xp! The only thing that would be time consuming is setting static ip's. And yes, you will have to reconfigure!

The pc will though! Which means re-doing it again, right? Unless he configured everything from the router than maybe not.

Most likely your router is given all the clients their IP information via DHCP, so all you'll need to do is reinstall the driver and connect the cable.

Yup!! If they are setup with static ip's then he will lose the settings.

Hi Again, Thanks for the replies...

To add I've just reformatted one of my other computers using the Local Area and It's working fine, All I had to do was plug the cable in...

I'm not really sure but I think the Router is configured through that, As I remember going through all the steps on my Browser,..Manual configuration then!

Also to note that my main computer doesn't have to be on or working or my Xbox or other computers to collect the connection...If that helps..

Thanks,

It doesn't matter which pc you configured the router through. Any settings you made to the router will be saved in the routers memory. You can change router settings from any pc connected to it. Your router which I assume has a built in modem does the actual connecting to the net and routing, not your pc's.

Why would it need to be? It's the router that is given out the IP information, not your PC.
