Router or internet problem?

In my apartment we use a linksys WRT54G2 wireless-g broadband router and have comcast highspeed internet.

Fairly often, the internet will cut out, but I am able to reconnect to the network and internet almost immediately. In general it's fine but is very annoying for online gaming.

My PS3 connects to the router through an ethernet cable and it too disconnects fairly often. The error is "ethernet not connected".

This led me to think the internet modem was causing the issue, but I really dont know.

I know its not the wireless adapters because all three of us living here have the problem and my computer works fine in other places.

So does it sound like a router or modem issue?

Could be either. Since you have comcast have them give you a different modem and test it out. If it still happens, you have a bad router.

Check with the router. I had the same problem with my Linksys. It turned out that I had to do a firmware update then it worked fine.

A lot of times when linksys boxes start getting older you tend to encounter issues like this. Typically power cycling them can fix the issue. What I would consider doing is flashing the router with different firmware such as DD-WRT. I've found that standard linksys firmware tends to become unstable after a period of time but I haven't had any stability issues with my linksys box that has been flashed with the DD-WRT firmware.

Thanks for the replies,

I checked out dd-wrt but it apparently doesn't cover wrt54g2 model 1.5

I am trying to update with newer linksys firmware, but it is not working. It always gets to firmware update successful, rebooting...
but then when its back on the old firmware is still listed.

I've tried hard resetting the router and restoring default settings but the firmware still won't update.

Any ideas?

sounds like it could be the router... First did you try connecting your computer right to the modem? id try that for a little while and see if it still happens. But it sounds like to me that its the router, I have had similar problems I went though many routers and it turned out that there was a conflict with the wireless signal with some phone our some device in the area that was on the same frequency the router was on. Some times changing the channel on the router can fix the problem, But it deff sounds like a router issue to me. If you cant get it to work, Call linksys the warranty is life time on wireless G they will send you a new router.
