Router OS Over-write question

Greetings All,

Question:
For example, if a 4-port linksys router (B + G modes) has it's Firmware/OS over-written and DDWRT installed, would that-could that same router "function" as an "N" router via DDWRT?

Not sure how you would influence physical radio properties with firmware, it's not a SDR.

Kind of like asking if updating your infotainment system gives your engine more cylinders.
