Router Range Extender

My router is a Netgear N600(WNDR3400v3). I'm having trouble getting a solid signal to a Roku located in the living room. My router is located in the basement. Wife's laptop located in the kitchen is getting a strong signal. Roku in the living room is only getting a "good" signal. Would a router extender help in this situation? If so what would be a good extender for my situation? Thanks!

Actually if you could run an ethernet cable between 2 routers then that would be the way to go. Or just run a cable from router downstairs to roku providing it has and an ethernet port.

Thought of that but that would be pretty involved with drilling holes and running the cable. Just thought I could plug a range extender in and do it that way. My wife's Roku gets a great signal but it's located only about 10ft from the router through the floor to the bedroom.

You can try the extender, put just above where the router is now. You'll lose some speed using the extender though.

So you just install the extender next to my router? I thought maybe you would install it halfway between the router and the device(Roku)that you are trying to get a stronger signal to. Sorry don't know much about this stuff. Thanks for your help John. Do appreciate it.

If the router is in the basement then put the extender on the next floor up just above where the router is or at least close to it. Then see what kind of signal you get. If not that great, try it a little closer to where you need it.

Ideally you should move your wireless router out of the basement and put it in the center of your home. Having it in the basement leads to wasted energy being sent into the ground.

Also, OP, the limited elevation plane of most omnidirectional antennas (in this case, the internal ones in the router) means you'd probably want it in the most central location of your house vertically.
