Does my PC/laptop have to be physically connected to the router to change the settings? Can this be done over a wireless connection?
 
No, you can edit the settings over the wireless. Just point your browser to (in most cases) 192.168.1.1
 
I have seen some routers that don't allow this. I know my router loaded with DD-WRT has the option of disabling wireless configuration. However, under most cases you can access it using wired or wireless connections.
