Router/Switch/Firewall

Is it possible to have a server which acts as a router/switch and firewall? Somewhat like a wireless router you would buy like the d-link extreme wireless n. Also, would it be better and safer to have an actual router like the d-link running or a server with the other computers connected through that?

How would i come about to set this up and what will i need?

Thanks

you could have a server set up as an internet gateway... if you want a secure connection, and allready have a server, buy a decent router (ie 150 to 300 bucks) and a switch. connect your modem to your router, then out from your router to your server, buy zone alarm pro, install it on your server, then run an eithernet cable out of your server to your switch... but honestlly, there really isnt no reason to be that secure, unless you have something to hide... the most efficent and cost effective way, is to just buy a decent router, and run the free version of zone alarm on all your pc's connected to it... just make sure, if you have wireless, thats its encrypted...

Thanks. Just another question, would it make sense to do it this way?

You have your modem connected to interet, then your internet gateway or proxy with whatever features you want connected to the modem, that computer connected to a router/switch and the all the other computers connected to that?

Ok i got the way my setup is going to be.

Cable modem, main router/firewall/dns server, d-link router which i will use as a switch by connecting my out from the server to a numbered port on the d-link instead of the wan port, and then from there my other computers are connected to the other ports on my d-link.

My biggest problem is i don't understand what i am supposed to do in order for the internet to get into one NIC and out the other to my network. I've tried playing around with the routing and access server settings with no luck :(
