i want to connect 3 computers and a cable modem. Whats a good brand of router and how much should i pay for it. i dont wanna go wireless so i can have halo LAN parties. what should the router i buy have? (ports) and what type of protocols should it support

I use a D-link 604; You should be able to find one for about $20-30US. It has 4 ports + internet. Very easy to setup and use. It will support TCP/IP and Netbios, which is what you need for internet/LAN networking. Works with any computer, PC/Mac/Linux.

yes i know they do but i dont wanna have to buy cards to hook up to my xbox id rather use ethernet cable

Just in case you change your mind about going wireless, i would get the D-Link DI-514. It is the 604 with wireless capabilities added. (still has 4 LAN)
