RPC stub error????

This may sound like a noob question but I'm trying to install vista on my friend's pc and I keep getting this error: Incompatible version of the RPC Stub, immediately followed by a fatal error which freezes the system. It's an HP pavilion with a 2.8 ghz pentium d, a 320 gb hdd with 289 gb available space, and I just installed a 1024mb pc4200 memory stick for a total of 1.5 gb of memory. There should be no reason why I can't install vista home premium on this system. I ran a virus scan using avg and didn't find anything so now I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

Can't install anything else either. In fact it won't read from the dvd drive and I get the same error when I try to use any of the installers on the HDD

my DVD drive dont read CDs well, try using a CD drive , and take out some RAM. bad ram causes freezes, restarts, crashes, blue screens, and other stuff. and check how much RAM your mobo can stand.

I don't think it's a hardware problem. I double checked all the specs. The mobo is compatible with pc 4200 memory, which I bought new from Best Buy (kingston). I took all the usual precautions (grounding myself before and while installing the memory, not touching any contact points, making sure it was locked in place, etc) I tried installing my DVD drive in her tower, which I know works fine and still got the same error, so it has to be a software problem, like a bad driver or something.
