I have a new HP lap top and I would like to run a cad program from an external hard drive. The program is large and I don't want to load it on my main HD. I would also like to load windows XP on this drive and boot up with that drive as the C drive.

To boot to your secondary drive will depend if bios supports it. Since its a laptop it will not work the same as a desktop (as far as I know), where you can simlpy make it a slave/master drive. How is you secondary h/d connected?

to run a program on it, the drive should just be connected, and you should be able to access it under a drive letter in 'my computer'.

So I don't have to have Win loaded just load the software to the ext drive?
