Obviously, I'm a nO0b....

If it's even possible (and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it isn't....), what would I need to do to my old Gateway SX-2800 to run Diablo 3 as smoothly as any typical console game would run?

I apologize if I posted in the wrong section(s), if so, I hope this thread just gets moved instead of flamed or deleted. Thanks. :D

Your section choice is okay. Don't worry about it.

As to answer your question. No. Video card is pretty much worthless for any kind of gaming.

Form factor isn't as much of an issue as your Power Supply. You need a strong power supply for pretty much any decent video card to run and you frankly don't have one.

Fine seems to be a stretch. He's running a 220 watt PSU that probably doesn't even out put over 200 watts. The card suggests a 400 watt PSU. I know that's there to have a cushion but that's still a asking for too much.

I agree with Denther. I would not risk it. I have my doubts that if the PSU could pull 200w. Even if it can I doubt that it would be for very long. If he could get a good PSU in the smaller form factor he could upgrade the GPU.
