Running External Monitors on Laptop? How to?

Hello,

I have a Gateway laptop and I am looking for a way to run one or two monitors off the laptop.

One monitor would be fine if that is easier but how would I go about doing this?
Looking to run a 19Inch monitor.

I don't want the monitor to mirror the laptop so do I need some kind of splitter or ???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

what gpu is it (ati or nvidia)? it is really easy to do. you can run an extended desktop. or you could completely turn off the laptop monitor display and just have the display on.

It really depends on the laptop (what outputs it has) and the GPU (as joh06937 said). Most laptops today have VGA, with a select few having HDMI and DVI. My newest one has HDMI and actually does all the switching itself when I plug a cable into it.

Most all standard/consumer based GPUs/laptops only support two outputs. Honestly, I'm not sure if say my laptop with HDMI and VGA could use both at once or not... I'll have to try that at some point.

However, assuming you don't have two outputs like this, you''ll have to purchase some form of external GPU. There are expresscard and USB based ones... Neither will give you very good performance for much anything more than basic computing (certainly no more performance than your internal GPU).

most likely you will not be able to run dual monitors out. i haven't heard of any monitors with dual output. can anyone else verify that?
