What do you guys recommend for a gaming system. Right now I'm just looking for some upgraged for my current PC. Preferrably able to run Half-Life 2, but not too high end. :)

Thanks
John

First of all a budget would be helpful. Secound am not clear if you want to upgrade your old system or buy a new computer from your post. If you want to upgrade your old computer we need to know what you have to make suggestions.

Rambus memory not sure about stats but I believe less than 128mb

Intel like 700 mhz

Monitor is fine

Harddrive has 25 GB capacity and like 9GB free

You don't want much!:p

Max out the ram (512) about $300

Maybe this gfx:

ATI Radeon 9800 PRO

That and the RAM is a little over your budget, but it is pretty much the best you could get for that system

minimum System Configuration

1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 capable graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection

Preferred System Configuration

2.4 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
DirectX 9 capable graphics card 256mb
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection

looking at your computer you would need to upgrade the ram and cpu at least to meet the minimun requiements for half life 2.

For $500 you might be able to make a better new computer then trying to spend $500 to inprove your old one. I would get a new case/power, motherboard, ram, cpu and video card and then just use the harddrive and cd drives/floopy drive and monitor from your old computer.

so I should just look into a new comp?

Yeah a quick example of what you can do is the following. I am not saying this the best you can do but with me doing a quick search this what I came up with.

Case $29
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-145-047&depa=1

Mobo $116 socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-128-263&depa=1

CPU $165 athlon 64 3000+ socket 939
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-103-501&DEPA=1

RAM $100 512MB(2X256) Geil pc3200 ram
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-512&depa=1

Video Card $100 Radeon 9600Pro
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-426&depa=1

everything else use parts you have already.

Total $510

This is just an example. A couple notes. I like this setup becuase this computer has plenty of room to be upgraded in the future. As you get more money you could slowly make this into a awsome computer.

There a few options like getting a socket 754 athlon 64 2800 which would save you on the motherboard also which gives you more money to get a better graphic card. Personally I dont like this option because it limits your ability to upgrade the computer. The graphic card I chose not idear for half life 2 but with half life 2 on the prober setting it will work fine. This computer easily handle all the recommended requirements for half life 2.

The case was just example if you see something for the same price you like more it will make no difference in the system.
