Rustock Spambot (HiJackThis!)

SideBlinded

New Member
Hey guys.
My mother in laws ISP says that a computer on her network is infected with Rustock Spambot, I've gone through the laptop which is the prime suspect, run through Malware Bytes and found nothing, I even manually looked for the files and folders and registry keys and discovered nothing malicious. I have two others to do but I've compiled a Hijackthis report and can't find anything that looks suspicious. Can anyone get a fresh pair of eyes on it and let me know if you see something out of place?

There are some entries I see as undesirable, and a lot that is unneeded. But first things first, please follow the below instructions VERY closely so we can begin. Run these scans in normal boot, not safe mode.

--------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware HERE or HERE and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    o and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log and a detailed description of the problems you are experiencing.

Having my doubts that this computer is the culprit. I have it at home (away from the other computers on the infected network) and have been monitoring network traffic using WireShark and have not noticed anything suspicious. Since this is an email botnet virus I would expect SMTP traffic to be coming from the infected PC.

Here are the mBAM results.

Why do think this machine is the prime suspect? We would need to see malwarebytes and hijackthis logs from each system to determine which one or all three are the culprits.

However, as Gamblingman as said, hijackthis needs to be run in regular mode not safe mode. Post the logs and we'll take it from there.

Just saw your new logs and the problem is not this machine.

There is some minor cleaning to do. Did you want to do that now or wait until we find out which one is causing the issue?

Of course, not my prime suspect, but my Mother-In-Laws. She suspects this computer as it does not belong to her and is not used by her.

Of course I do the maintenance on this computer regularly and am fairly certain that it is not Viri'd. I haven't gone indepth however, so a rootkit wouldn't be impossible.

I assume the minor cleaning is mostly to do with the Acer software? This prefab was loaded with a bunch of crap when it was purchased (Acer Gamezone, Arcade ect.) is that what we are referring to or something else?

MBAM and HighJackthis reports have come in from the 2nd computer in question, I did find some errant registry keys with Mbam but they do not look like the Rustock Spambot keys. Mbam fixed them. Here are the reports.

There are A LOT of entries here, and probably some issues there, but I am conserned with locating the virus. I don't think its here.

Again, I don't see anything serious going on there except for some minor cleanup.

Post the malwarebytes and hijackthis logs from the third machine.

Mbam is still running, many profiles on this computer so it is taking its time. So far has not returned any malicious software, will post when it finishes.

Ok, while we are waiting for the Malwarebytes log, I need to ask some questions.

1. Are you using a wireless router and are any of these pc's using the wireless? Also do you have security enabled on the router?

2. 2 pc's have AVG installed on them and the other one as mcafee installed, are they fully updated and have they been ran on the system lately?

Either we have a deep hidden infection or someone is using the wireless with or without your mother in laws permission that is infected.

Please answer my questions and then we'll figure out what the next step is.

The wireless network is secured using WPA-2 TKIP security, mac filtering and hidden SSID.

(Networking is my speciality, CCNA)

The two AVGs are set to update upon launch and do-so. The Mcafee is a disaster, it is provided by the employer of my mother-in-law, I updated it and she used it to scan when the ISP first shut them down, they also used the Windows Malicious Software removal (They both missed the keys that mBam picked up)

I had to head out before the mbam scan was finished but I will get them to send me the results once it is completed.

I'm starting to doubt the ISP, I've been monitoring the software all day, looking for SMTP traffic but cannot find any. (This virus is an apparent SMTP spambotnet)

This lack of traffic and lack of virus is leading me to believe I'm on a wild goose chase.

Not necessarily,

Go to each computer and see if this directory exists.

c:\Program Files\rhcnotj0e5eg

You may need to change the option to display hidden files and folders.

If that directory shows up then its part of the infection.

These 2 entries are not infections.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

This one is just a remnant of an infection.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Ext\Stats\{2d2bee6e-3c9a-4d58-b9ec-458edb28d0f6} (Rogue.DriveCleaner) -> No action taken.

You did click on remove selected after that scan?

Each computer does not have the known directory or any of the known registry entries for Rustock. First thing I checked, I'm by no means a novice user, I just don't know how to properly interpret the Hijackthis that well and decided to put it to the experts.

Download, update and run superantispyware on each machine. Make sure you update it first before running a full scan.

http://download.cnet.com/SuperAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html

Post the logs after each scan for each computer. To find the log for the scan you did, click on the preferences button on the main page, click on the statistics/logs button and then open the log, copy and paste back here.

It'll take me a couple days to get back to there. I'll post back once its done. Thanks for your help.

I thought forsure it was gone/not there, but the ISP has shut down the connection once again, I will be posting SASW logs as soon as I can (Saturday)

Why your at it since you don't have the machine in front of you all the time, do this as well to each machine.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Here is the log from one computer I was able to do remotely using TeamViewer, can't do the combofix remotely however,

Some interesting results, a lot of cookies that it doesn't like very much, not worried about them however at the bottom there is a rootkit entry,

Rootkit.Agent/Gen-TDSS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\MIXFZWL.SYS

Could be a potential threat, I'm surprised mbam missed it, here is the log, more to come.

I cut out many of the cookies to make it conform to character length. Let me know if you need them.

Cutting the cookies out is fine. I'm more concerned about the tdss infection superantispyware found.

When you send new logs let me know which corresponding computer they are from. Just match them with the original scans.

The log you just gave me, which does that match up to in the hijackthis logs? first, second, or third log?
