Same SATA Controller?

I am wanting to use my old computer as a server, so I was planning on adding (3) 1.5 TB drives to the computer. But in order to do that, I would have to install a SATA Controller. I've heard that if you use a controller and it messes up, you will no longer have access to the files on those drives, even if you do get a new controller. The only way to be able to access them would be to get a controller of the same make and model as the original one you used. Is this true?

Thats only if you run the disks in a specialized way. If you get a SATA controller and run the disks as they are, simple partitions; Not JBOD, not RAID, no encryption, then you'll be fine. If the card fails, you'll be able to hook the disks up to any other computer and see the data. :).

If you would like, you can extend this thread further by placing a link to a card you are looking at. Or a budget. And we can help with recommendations or further discussion!
