Samsung 840 EVO Basic vs Samsung 840 Pro

Looking to buy an SSD for the ThinkPad to replace the 1TB SSHD. I'm thinking about going with one of Samsung's 840 drives.

I can get the 250GB version of the 840 EVO Basic for about £85 or the 840 Pro 250GB for about £125 or so.

Looking at the read and write speeds alone, I can't really see any reason to get the Pro over the Basic - but maybe I'm missing something. So what is the difference between the two and is it worth spending the extra on the Pro?

The pro has different types of flash which make it more reliable in heavy read and write scenarios and slightly faster. This is not required 99% of the time so go with the standard evo.

Excellent, thanks. :good:

I bought the EVO by the way. I'm very happy with it. It's the fastest SSD I've ever owned and I've owned a fair few of them now.

Would recommend to anybody!

I have the EVO as well (update your benchmark thread btw :P), love it!

The only new scores which are not present on the leaderboard at the moment are my 840 EVO scores and your RAID-0 scores. Apart from those scores it is up-to-date.

But I will get round to updating it. ;)

I still say you shouldn't include RAPID as it's not a true measurement of sustained drive speed :)

You just wanna be number 1 on the leaderboard don't you? :P

And yes come the next update RAPID scores will be removed from the leaderboard.

RAPID should be included as that drive actually enables that speed... without it, you cannot use it

But it actually has an effect.... its real, its detectable so why not?
Because it's not a true measure of performance. RAPID utilizes 1GB of physical RAM, and the test we are running uses 1GB of data.

It's like running benchmarks saying your overclock is stable enough to run a short benchmark, but if you run it for long periods of normal use, it doesn't last.

A good benchmark is a measure of a sustainable speed, not burst rates.

Well certainly for the time being RAPID scores are not being counted in the main leaderboard. It is also a slight unfair advantage over the other SSDs which I don't think have that feature.

The RAPID scores are staying off for the time being. I might put them back in the future, but for the time being they are staying off. They're still all there in the thread so if I ever do decide to put them back on it's easy enough.

No more discussion about this is needed. The original question has been answered. :)
