Samsung Galaxy S3 WI-FI question

So I got a Samsung Galaxy S3 and since I'm downloading a lot of things I have WI-FI on all the time while at home. However when I go out I usually forget to turn it off and it drains power quickly. Is there a way or an app that will only turn on the WI-FI if I'm within range of a certain network?

I attempted to save battery life by turning off Wifi and I honestly didn't notice much difference on that phone. Mobile data sucks battery more than anything else for me. As for an app I'm not sure. I was screwed up once and had my Wifi off and forgot to turn it back on and managed to use up my entire month of data in about 30 minutes (I only have 300 megs).

Im confused Denther. I just bought one two weeks ago the same. If ya have your wifi off and forgot to turn back on then how did you use your data?
Just asking. basically i just use and connected when at home on the router. Its on all the time. If i leave the house then data is only associated with connecting out of range. Its never been a problem. Mine is on 24 hrs a day. I turn off GPS and turn on when needed. Please explain.

If he kept his WiFi off, then any web app only accessed through his data connection. That's how he used his months allocation of data.

I found no noticeable difference in battery life on my GS2E4GT with Wifi on/off. I tested both ways for 3-4 days when I first got my phone and through normal daily work usage (phone calls, texts) the daily percentage average by the time I returned home was like 3% difference. As mentioned, GPS sucks a lot.

The standby-time for the screen auto-off can make a huge difference though. I have my haptic keys set at 6 seconds and my screen at 1 minute. I roll with a darker-themed lock and wallpaper, so some power is saved there also. I frequently go 36 hours with moderate usage with those settings, while my GF has her iYuppie4S at full brightness powering colorful background with a 10-minute screen-on idle time and has to charge twice a day.

The difference won't be noticeable, at least in my view.

I have my wi-fi on all the time, whether I'm connected through wi-fi or not, my battery lasts the same as if I had turned off wi-fi when it's not in use.

O im suprised, i have the S3 and i found turning off the wifi on my phone makes quite a big difference. This might be because i dont use my phone so much, so it has a long time in which to make more of a difference.

I find it makes a difference, it would be cool if there was an app that could turn it on when you were in range though. Is the screen on your S3 super sensitive? I find that sometimes I push buttons without actually physically touching the screen.

Are you sure? I know at least 4 people that own Galaxy S3 right off the top of my head, and they never complained about wi-fi. I just asked my dad and my gf and they leave wi-fi on, whether it's on or not, it makes almost no difference....

Unless you're walking by a heavily populated area with routers everywhere (coffeeshops, libraries, etc...) then your phone might be constantly reaching out to get new sources but I seriously don't think having wi-fi on all the time is an issue at all.

Yeah I usually see the WI-FI symbol with a question mark on it, you would think that would remind me to turn it off.

Yeah sometimes the phone will register touches that I didn't even feel. It's pretty sensitive. But I love it because my old touch screen phone wasn't very much so and I always felt like I had to mash my thumb down on it to get a response.

Yeah I was going to take this phone back and get something else because of that but I'm getting used to it, it's a pretty sweet phone especially coming from using an HTC Magic.
