Sandy Bridge has DRM

I have heard rumors the FBI has also used OnStar to listen in on conversations they were interested in without search warrants. I hope this is not true. OnStar is a horrible service in my mind and knowing now that the technology can be used to disable a vehicle makes me never want to own a vehicle that has it.

ive been doing alot of reading and found this out. if you don’t want to use the Insider feature(DRM), there is no need to, just avoid the services that use it. It does not affect your own personal content in any way.DRM is used by online sites that stream video to your PC to keep it safe,it does not effect anything else.you can rip dvd/cd's and back them up with no problem.pretty much you can do all the things you do now on your current PC.remember if you dont like DRM or dont want to use it stay away from the services that use it.the services that use it like amazon unbox, will moniter and send back info about what you have and have DL to your PC,why? because they use DRM.

I purchased this laptop yesterday. Tonight I am going to download DRM content from Zune and strip the license to see if it is affected. I will also backup a DVD, and try to capture video offline from a streaming service such as NETFLIX. I do not preform piracy as a matter of habit at all, but am very interested to see if this processor affect any of those type of activities. I will post my findings, if anyone cares. I have not been able to find any info on this on the net as of yet...

I am going to fly on a plane tonight. I am going to tape 4 red candles together with a cell phone and some wires attached and see if TSA catches it.:D

I like your idea and I do look forward to your results. But you are aware that with some of the idiotic laws in place you technically would be guilty of a fairly serious offense?

I have trouble with some of the laws and the way they intrude. Of course we both know you won't get in trouble for this. But even the theoretical I have issue with.:)

Ha ha ha...that's funny and novel...I doubt the TSA would catch you. I am very, very close to air travel procedures and control for the US and understand that the TSA could do better at their job. Regardless, these actions are a necessary evil to find out if indeed Intel has produced a technology that does not allow video and audio streams to be captured if they are being re-recorded, if you will, into an unlicensed format from a licensed format. I'll let you know...and certainly perhaps it goes without saying that this is a one time event in the interest of technology, and not at all for personal gain. Cheers:)

Also, it should be noted that backing up a DVD is fair play as of today I do believe...and like the TSA and other laws they are put into place in attempt to protect, and rightly so, those that seek to harm the US, or rather in this case intellectual property, they are in fact extremely warranted due to the amount of piracy that does take place. However, intrusive laws like the internet black list are a bit heavy handed, but in the end I am in full support of the US Government in attempt to right wrongs, and their own mistakes made in the past...

Sandybridge DRM

Update 1: Audials8 has failed on screen capture of DVD( specifically Kill Bill Vol 2 ) unknown error something I have not seen before stating that it failed to convert( 3 attempts ). DVD Fab is proceeding with the conversion as of right now is functioning normally.

Update 2: Audials8 has successfully captured audio stream of DRM licensed songs from Zune and saved them as unlicensed. DVD Fab is still working after a failure at 43% on first try with error that stated the DISC has a copywrite and cannot be read. Currently, at 52% on second try with no errors.

Update 3: Played downloaded torrent content via Windows Media Player without error. Content has since been deleted:).

Update 4: DVD Fab has completed backup. AVI file plays fine. Not sure what happened first time around. Audials8 screen captured licensed content from Zune marketplace (The Girl that Kicked the Hornets Nest). All files have since been deleted due to buzzing helicopters over my house...

Conclusion: All tests conducted on g73sw-xr1 ASUS laptop. Test's were very simple done with very common DRM removal software...Audials8(aka Tunebite) and DVDFab. I suspect that capturing the screen on a NetFlix streaming movie would be pretty easy to do, however I did not attempt that. I do believe that the DRM chip rumored to be in SandyBridge processors is either not in the one used on this laptop, or more likely intended for some other purpose than those talked about in this forum thus far. The only thing that did not work was the screen capture of a DVD in Audials using the DVD menu in the program itself. This I do believe is related to some technical issue I don't wish to put time into, but I'm sure could be solved.

Also, about this particular computer and I'm sure it's in the wrong forum...but if you add a SATA III SSD, it is by far the fastest computer I've seen on the market...wow.
