Sapphire HD4870 temps

I just bought this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102849

I ran a load test on this and noticed it was getting hot 80c @ 99% load for about 30min and the fan was only running 70%. Is there a better program I can use to set my fan speed according to temps? I know I can manually set it higher but would like for it to automatically adjust the fan speed. The ATI overdrive will kick the fan speed up to 75% but it has to be < 80c.

Thanks

you should invest in an aftermarket cooler.
You could also replace the thermal paste.

For a good cooler, look into the Thermaltake DuOrb, but get the GPU version. there is a CPU version also.

Yes, I did remove the cooler and reapplied wit artic siver 5 which helped about 5-6 degrees. So it moved to 75c @ 99% load but the fan is only running at 60%. It would have to get to 100c for ati overdrive to kick the fan upto 100%. If I am gaming the card never pushes constant max like this does it?? I thought I read some where of some program to control fan speeds but they did not state anymore details.

That's why I don't like ATI. Their cards get boling hot, my 4850 got fried up after 2 months of use. I have an Antec 300 case and 4 120mm fans. It got as high as 110C when playing Crysis for about 20min! Go with nVidia......

I do not regret buying ATI but I am kinda regrettig not buying one with a better cooler. I maybe should have spent another $25 and got the HIS IceQ card.
My max temp is 75c since I changed thermal paste so is this a respectable temp for this card?
It dropped 5-6c since I changed thermal paste it was running at 80-81c before.

This is with a constant load at 99% I do not think gaming would hold this card to the wall like that would it?

Ok, I noticed the gpu clock is set to 780mhz by default instead of the advertised 750mhz. I set it back then retested and got a max temp of 72c and a idle temp of 54c. What is the normal temps for these cards??

I still can not beleive the fan stays at 24% until it gets 66c then it switches to 50%.

You can use RivaTuner to set the fan speed. it will override Ati overdrive on overclocks as well. You need to unlock the settings in the "power user" tab to enable overclocking and fan control in rivatuner. it should be pretty straightfoward. I would still invest in a new GPU cooler, or you could point some case fans at the 4870.

Better yet, you could save a bit more and get a 5850, when they are released in Australia of course... Dammit, why does aus get things 3-6 months after the US gets them?

I run the same card (SAPPHIRE 100279-1GL) in an HAF 922 case with max temps at full utilization in the mid 60s. It was a replacement for a pair of 8800gtxs which would routinely run above 80C under load. I would look to air flow in the case and heat generating things like hard drives in the intake area. You might also try a case with a side intake vent, I've used two with good results.

You must have had a defective card my 4850 is idle a 39C right now and I have never seen it go over 61C full load.

80*c on load for a gpu is fairly normal i wouldnt worry unless its getting 90*c and higher

Yep it is common although I would still recommend you keep it as cool as possible as 80C is not safe for the card.

@ I would recommend you check your airflow I have 2 80mm fans blowing over my card. If I unplug the fans my temps go up to 45C idle over the 39C it's at now.

It is released in AU! Umart had them since 2 weeks ago
