SAS vs SATA

there is a pile of used SAS drives at a local computer reuse store. what are the diferences between SAS and SATA. is one better than the other?
 
Serial attached SCSI vs Serial ATA. One will work in your home computer, the other won't unless you have a SAS controller add-in card.
 
Having to get a new controller was a given. What I was wondering is what are the pros and cons to each type of drive?

Reliability and performance. If performance is your main goal though, you're much better off with an SSD.
