sata and ide at the same time

ok so my goal is to have my original IDE drive continue running windows but use my new SATA for the disc space. I have hooked up the new hard drive and it has power but it is not recognized by windows.

The new drive is a western digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM and my mother board is an MSI which is SATA compatible. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=865GVM2-LS&class=mb

I checked in BIOS to try to enable my SATA controller but wasn't sure what setting to change. I'm nervous about messing with those settings and possibly messing up my computer.

I've been trying to find the solution by reading up online but frankly my head is spinning. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

edit: ok i have found the setting that would need to be changed in BIOS but I'm not sure if there is another step I need to take first.

Are you running the IDE drive in your current PC and you wish to add an SATA drive, or are you doing a whole upgrade and wish to simply put the old drive in the new computer? If thats what you want to do, windows doesn't like a lot of new hardware. It probably wouldn't boot.

If you just want to add a drive, you shouldn't even have to mess with the settings unless SATA is disabled or the particular SATA channel you wish to use is disabled.

outstanding! it's showing up in device manager

thanks a lot. I guess I was just trying to be careful since I had never done it before.
