Sata drive

I just bought a western digital caviar 160 GB sata drive.....i unplugged my WD 40 GB IDE and then hooked up the sata drive....in the bios its showing that the sata drive is on the third IDE master channel is this an issue? and if so how do i set it to primary IDE channel?
 
That's probably just how your motherboard work. I'm quite sure that's how my room mate's works as well. The drive basically runs in IDE mode. You can't make it the primary master, because that would "remove" the Primary IDE channel. Any more, it makes no real difference what order the drives are connected to your board.

What I tend to do is connect CD-ROM's and what not to the Secondary IDE, disable the Primary IDE, and any extra SATAs(I have a mobo with 8 connections) Does this make any difference if you have them all enabled? Nope, that's just what I do :P
 
The ide controller automatically overrides SATA by default. You have to refer to the board's manual or support site FAQs for specifics on enabling the SATA controllers and setting that as the primary boot device. Serial ATA and EIDE are two separate buses. Originally Sata was intended for increasing storage similar to what was done with SCSI and RAID arrays.

Different board manufacturers like Gigabyte have articles on configuring Sata drives as the primary host drives. In the boot devices and integrated peripherals there's usually the option to assign Sata or Sata array instead of ide as the host.

They all work like that if you have both PATA and SATA (which every motherboard I know of has). Nothing to worry about.
 
alright thanks alot guys....its working fine i just thought that was a little strange looking in the bios my dvd burner is in the primary IDE channel

It's listed on the primary channel as a slave, unless you switched the default jumper setting, because it's an ATAPI device.. If it was a SATA device it would be on one of the last channels along with your WD.
