Sata hard drive partition error

I just built a new pc with a new sata wd 250gb hard drive. Every time I try to install xp, I get an error during formating of my partition. I have tried it several times using different sized partions all with the same results. Any ideas?
 
What does the error say or does it just say 'failed' or some other generic error message?
 
I use xp sp1. The error is generic. I select the partition that I want to install xp into. It then tells me to format the drive. I have tried both normal and fast format. Nothing has worked. It usualy gets anywere from 50-97 % complete befor it gives me the error saying that xp can not be installed due to drive format error.
