SATA HDD only works after Cmos reset

Hi!
First of all, thanks in advance for any replys, and help!
I've got an old rig:
Asus P5KPL 1600
4GB DDR2
Intel Core2duo E5200
WDC 250GB SATA
For a few months, I've had windows xp installed, and it worked fine, cause that rig is used primarily for checking mail, and browsing. Yesterday, i installed win 7, 64x, and it went flawlessly, till the point when windows update installed all the updates, and prompted for a restart, and before that i even installed chrome, and skype, and browsed the web for a few hours! Since then, my hdd can be detected by BIOS, only if I reset the CMOS. I've tried switching ports, cables, PSU, nothing worked. BIOS is set to enhanced mode, sata+pata, although I tried every other option, without success! Defaults also dont work. I've tried connecting an old IDE HDD, and it boots just fine, even detects that SATA hdd, but as soon as i remove it, im back to square one! Any help would be much appreciated!

Well windows update won't cause issues with the bios not showing your hdd. I would suspect maybe a faulty motherboard. Is there a bios update for your motherboard?

There are a few updates, but none of them mention sata or any hdd compatibility fix.. I'm updating bios at this moment. I thought about a faulty mobo, but it doesnt make sense, because other sata drives work, optical drive etc..

It was a bios problem, i updated it, and now it detects the sata hdd. BUT, now it wont boot from cd. It gets to the black screen, after bios, and everything, and there's only a blinking underscore.. And it still cant boot into win 7, and it gives me BSOD... Im really out of ideas now..

Sounds like to start with you installed Windows in IDE mode. Change your controller in the bios to IDE mode and see if it boots. If it does there is a way to change windows to SATA/AHCI, but see if it boots first. As far as booting to the DVD/CD drive, a lot of them have a problem booting in SATA/AHCI mode. It should boot from it after you change the controllers to IDE mode.

Thanks for the replies, i've got it sorted. It wasn't installed in IDE mode, I checked earlier. I honestly really don't know what I did to make it work. I think, somehow the bios got busted, either from a faulty battery, or maybe some kind of a power surge, or something. I have updated it to the latest version, and that solved the problem with the hdd not shoving. Interesting thing is, I later downgraded bios version to the original, and it still worked. As to cd not booting, I think there was a problem with SATA connectors, I've changed it a bit, and it worked. Thanks again for all your help!
