SATA II connection?

I am looking at getting a 1Tb HDD to move all my media over to in order to save room on my other HDD. The problem I am running into is that I cannot distinguish between SATA and SATA II cables. I know one of them has an L-shaped connector, but I don't know which one. The drive I am looking at required SATA II and I don;t want to waste 90$ on a drive I can't use. Help please?

The cables are basically the same. The difference being, newer ones have latches to lock the cable on and the L connector. You wont be limiting drive speeds with either one.

The reason I pose the question is that the folks over at Newegg made it seem like a SATA II connector wouldn't work in a a SATA slot (and vice versa). I did a google image search (the good old college try) to try to figure out which was which, but got conflicting answers.

Are the two compatible?

Yes. SATA and the faster SATA 3.0Gbps specs are compatable with each other. Electrically, the cables are the same as well.

Like said when Sata 3.0 came out they started putting the little locking clamp on the cable, but they are the same. Both will work with either.
