Sata ports dead?

Hey, my friends computer is broken. When i boot it up i get a "Insert proper boot device...". I went into the bios, and his hard drive wasnt on the boot menu and wasn't recognized in the bios. When i went to the peripheral section, it said that the Sata drives weren't detected. He said that the computer just randomly shut off when he was using it. Do any of you have any ideas? Is the mobo just fried? Thanks.

I'd suspect a drive issue over a motherboard issue... Can you test it in another machine, or test another drive in that one?

Idk, the thing is the mobo doesnt even detect the sata slots.
It says:
Sata 1: Not Detected
Sata 2: Not Detected
Sata 3: Not Detected
Sata 4: Not Detected

Is it suppose to say that?

I know but the drive was working just fine for over a year and didnt have any signs of it dying. Could a drive just die and restart the computer?

when the computer restarts alot, and gets BSOD's, it's a sign of a dead/dying HD.
Um...that wasn't even the problem? And even so, that's never a sure sign of the processor. RAM, power supplies, motherboard, drivers, heat, and many other things could cause that.

Don't post if you arent going to help. I never said anything about BSOD or restarting a lot.

Anyways, i just need to know what to get, a new hdd or a new mobo.

Well please don't "help" if you can't back up what you post...

Darn it Motoxrdude, you beat me :P Anyway, I'd look into a harddrive first, BUT, I would test before purchasing if at all possible. I still feel it's HD related.

OK thanks for helping The_Other_One. Ill try and find a sata hdd to test.
If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks.
