SATA to eSATA ?

I'm back, with a slightly different issue. I'm trying to troubleshoot the loss of an SSD. I've swapped ports and data cables but I still periodically lose it (i.e., it doesn't show up under This PC). So, the SSD, let's call it the K: drive, because that's what I call it, sometimes shows after I move the cables around a little and turn the system back on, but most of the time, it doesn't. I have a multi-function panel on the front with an eSATA port. It is connected to a USB 3 connector on the motherboard. I also have a SATA to eSATA cable.

To narrow down where the problem might be located, could I run a cable from the SATA port on the internal hard drive to the eSATA port on the multi-function panel to see if the Samsung SSD port is good? I am thinking that it would show up as a drive on File Explorer. Or am I completely misunderstanding something?

Any help is certainly appreciated.
