I have a new WD 160 gig SATA 1 HDD. I also have a diagnostic program that i use to monitor this HDD. The program says 1. that my HDD is always around 160 degrees Fahrenhiet. 2. It is operating in Ultra DMA mode- 133mbps. The first i dont believe, because i have a case fan blowing on it. The second- i kind of beleive, as i have not noticed much of an improvement over my old 1.7 gig ATA, other than space. Is there a way to enable (if the program is not lying) SATA 1.5gps? the program may be lying, and then i just had a slow drive or something, but please- i have looked through my entire BIOS (A8N5X) trying to find something that would relate.
Any help is appreciated.

I'm trying to get familiar with installation and running SATA with or without any controller myself. But I would say toss the diagnostic program into that ole recycle bin fast. Assuming you are running an Asus mobo you could go for their PC Probe V2 temp utility as well as a hard drive cooler if there is a need.

Going to Western Digital direct to grab a few of their drive utilities will tell you if there are any problems with the drive itself. The normal temp range is from 5-55C according the specs seen. http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1026&p_created=1056554169
