Saving electricity on my computer

I leave my computer to download and upload and defrag over night. I switch off my monitor and leave just my computer on. Is it true that a computer uses only 30 percent of the electricity and the monitor 70 percent. So by doing this I am saving energy and getting done what i want done?

depends..my monitor uses I think 80 watts.. My tower power supply uses/err supplies 300 watts.. So if you're downloading a lot while afk, it may use a lot of that power, if it's not doing too much it will use less.. IF you have it set to hibernate, then it uses hardly any power...

The amount of power we as individuals use it quite minimial, the people who has the power to make a difference are the big corporations. I work in technical support call centre and all the computers stays on 24/7, not to mention the lights, so you aren't going to make a difference even if you don't use your computer.
Also power is rather cheap, I don't know about the US, but in Australia power is dirt cheap, maybe that's why everyone is wasting it. Maybe they need to jack up the price.......

I give him credit for trying/asking what he can do, i try to turn my equipment off or into power saving modes as much as possible, i might be just one person but no reason to waste what i dont need.
To answer your question well i dunno ha i place my PC in standbye or turn it off when i m not around.

my computer setup uses about 175 watts on idle.
250 if im playing crysis.
and about 550 if im using the projector.

i have worked out that it costs about 16 cents a day to run it with average use without the projector hah

I always turn my computer off when I don't use it, don't get me wrong I support the notion that we have to collectively act to change something, but change is initiated by the individual. Its just a little disheartening to see that no matter what I do, the corporate world is going be much worse anyway. That's why I go around turning computers off every night before I go home. :D

i do the same thing. leave the pc on 24/7.

under power settings i chose "minimal power management" to enable low power to the cpu when it is idling.

sounds perfectly right.

its not like if you have a 500watt psu then your using 500watts.

i used like a special adapter thing to measure the actual electricity and everything flowing into the power board that supports my computer. got about 175.

out of curiosity how does that value compare when running that program? is it close?

ok so basically the program matches the actual amount my computer uses. but the graphics card figure is way off... and yet everything still adds up.

what do you guys get? heres mine.
