i put a ddr2 type ram in a ddr slot and i saw smoke come out when i turned the comp on, and everytime i turn the comp on it just makes beeping noises, what would that mean? :P

btw its a shitty comp so i dont give two rats about it

and i never done this my brother did, apparently he forced the ram in -__-

well you definitely broke the DDR2 ram since DDR2 RAM is made to NOT fit in the DDR slot.

nope, the ram looks fine, thats what ammuses me, he forced it and the little bump that goes into the hole at the bottom of the ram is flattened, so the rams fine but the ram slot is a bit f'd, but still whats with the beeping lol

It may look fine on the outside. It is toast on the inside. DDR2 RAM is NOT compatible with DDR(1) slots. There is a reason the slots have different pin configurations and that "bump" in the middle.

You probably toasted the motherboard, too. Try some actually DDR RAM in the slot to see if it will still boot.

Keep this rule of thumb in mind when upgrading/repairing a computer: if it won't fit in the slot or connector, it isn't meant to be there in the first place.

say the ddr2 ram is blown or wateva if i put it in a motherboard that accepts it could it harm the working motherboard??

I don't think so.

The reason I say the RAM is probably fried as well is because DDR and DDR2 have different pin counts and different voltage settings. So when the DDR2 got forced into the wrong slot there's lots of different ways it could have been fried.

Cromewell is probably right. It shouldn't harm the motherboard. Though, if the RAM has shorted badly enough internally and cross connects what it shouldn't, it is possible that the fried module could damage the motherboard.
It definitely won't work, so why chance it?

well lets tell you the whole story, i should have done this from the whole beginning but anyway basically.....

I got given this 1gb stick of ddr2 ram, my friends computer has 3gb and wants to use it on his last slot to make it 4gb, i had it at my house and when i wasnt there my brother used it and tried to force it into an old computer, i just asked him and he said that he saw smoke coming from the slot but not the ram, i have no idea if the ram works or not now, but my friend keeps insisting that it will work and he has only just got this computer, im afraid that if he uses it and harms his mobo then his mum will blame it on me, and even though she probably wont i just dont want him to be left without a comp because of his arrogance.

I can't say 100% that it will be fine but I don't think it will fry anything else just by putting something that's probably already dead in.

i lol'd... i do recognize the beep though- it happens to me when i tried to boot up my comp without ram... my fans were spinning like crazy...

it's ok tho

ive tried it with ram aswell now it just keeps beeping haha, anyway yh so like have any of u tried a stick of ram that dont work in a computer and know it wont harm it?

The reason why you can fry not just the ram but also the board is the exotic connections you are making when putting something in there that doesn't belong. Making ground connections the wrong places will drain a lot of power

 Do you mean that you have tried a working DDR stick in the now-probably-toast motherboard? You most likely have fried the interconnects on the motherboard to the DIMM socket. Of course it will still beep - it can't recognize any RAM in there.

not when hes flattened the little bumpp in the slot

do you want me to make a video? LOL

ill make him to it again :P

This is getting silly now... Learn from this, and don't do it again. ;)
