Scammed

Around a year ago we purchased a second hand computer from a company from the news papers, as I was a complete noob I thought it sounded great; 128mb RAM 20GB HDD; amazing. :l
Anyway, we were ripped off. He sold us freeware and an illegal copy of Norton AV. Anyway I purchased an XP disk from him, installed it and it contained MS Bomber worm; my mother rang him and he took it away to install a 'genuine' version of XP onto the system. A few months later he updated out AV, mum paid him £30 for it, we soon found out that our copy of XP is illegal and our AV was a trial.
What can we do about this situation, if we reported it would we be in trouble for using an illegal copy of XP?

Probably not what you want here but I dont think what you would have to go through to get justice would be worth it in the end, I bet the XP was Professional right? usually is because it dosent need to be registered. For Antivirus software and a hell of lot of other general utility software you can find it for free on the web or by posting here.

I would just take it as a lesson learned and be more cautious who you buy from in future, maybe others have a different view but I feel that what I have wrote is pretty realistic.

We need to upgrade systems soon anyway, I do see what you mean though and yes it was PRO and I did only start getting the 'Not Gunuine XP..' alerts after installing Norton.

If you want a good deal then try upgrading/bullding yourself, trust me its cheaper and means you get exactly what you want, its easy too, with online guides and forums like this one you can prepare specs and have people talk you through the whole process, something to consider :)

Good luck for future upgrades.

I have thought about that but i'm scared of ****ing it all up to be honest. I don't have Ebay nor Paypal as i'm under 16, how would I get the parts?

Thanks :)

Possibly. The best thing to do would be to just buy a legal version and start afresh. Microsoft will soon starting bugging users who have illegal copies anyway. I guess you could report him to the authorities for scamming you, Windows may not even need know and it would prevent him pulling the same s**t again with someone else.

Either have your parents help you (they pay with their cards and you pay them back afterwards), or buy the parts you need from specialist stores. It would be more expensive that way, so if possible I'd go with option one.

thus far Microsoft has done little or nothing about illegal XP copies in the hands of end users, but they DO want to know if you bought it from a business and it was illegal, since that means one copy versus hundreds of copies. On the Microsoft website they say they will not pursue legal action against anyone at the consumer level who has an invalid copy of Windows

alright since U had a bad deal, what u need to do is tell ur parent to give microsoft europe a call and they will get a court order for the police to coming to his company and confiscate all the illegal softwares , basicly his business will be closed until the investigation is done, But for microsoft to investigate and get court order they need evidence. That mean ur parent must show proof that they bought the stuff from him.

Or u can tell ur parent to buy a real xp and have clean start, and don't buy anything from him again.
