scan disk trouble

I have an old Gateway G-6-300 with Windows 98. When I try to scan disk I get message it has tried 10 times and failed. I have tried closing all running programs and have tried safe mode, but I receive message "This Program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." What else can I try? My computer seem to run ok, but I would like to run scan disk. Is there updates or different scan disks that might work?
Thanks: mailliw

if you are doing a through scan and depending on the speed of your drive it may take 30-1 half hour. somehow defrag and scan in dos is slower than in windows.

I have never used DOS mode. How is the easy way to get it to scan disk?
Thanks mailliw
While Windows is starting press the F8 key, this will bring you to boot choices. Choose DOS prompt.

In DOS prompt. type "scandisk" then hit the Enter key.

Thank you Supremo, I finally got it to scan. It easy with the right help, impossible for me without it. Again Thanks: mailliw

You could also have programs running in the background. In the future, you might like to press [cntl] [alt] [del] and shut down any background apps that you do not need.
