Screen behavior.

Well, it was JUST recalled; what the procedure was for gaining the formatting/recovery command, again. It was nestled under the F10 button, and I ran through the procedure. The desktop is no longer with the black background, but everything else is pretty much the same 'messed up' way that it was. There are just three icons on my desktop. One, is the Recycle Bin, and the other two (both of them) are (greyed out) desktop.ini icons.

I still can't get on the Internet with it, and can't do much of anything else, either.
 
UPDATE:

Due to John's perseverance, and extreme helpfulness to me, I seemed to have conquered the bulk of my previous dilemma. The only thing I seem to be shouldered with, now, is the problem with Internet connectivity. I have battled with this thing for hours, yet cannot seem to make any headway. I am always steered towards having to tether my laptop to our router via an Ethernet cable. But we have wireless service here (Verizon FIOS), and I just don't see why an Ethernet cable should be required.

I just looked in the Device Manager (under Other DevIces) and see that there are yellow indicators on each of the three listed items:

1. Base System Device (drivers for this device are not installed - code 28)
2. Network Controller (drivers for this device are not installed - code 28)
3. Unknown Device (drivers for this device are not installed - code 28)

I've clicked on 'Update Driver' for each, but can't gain any such update because of the fact that I cannot connect to the Internet.

Is there any hope for my laptop?
 
I did connect an Ethernet cable to my laptop, just to see if I could get on the Internet THAT way - and I WAS able to. But I don't want to have to be tethered in order to have connection ability.

How in the world do I get the Wireless Network Adapters - or whatever it is that I might need?

In Device Manager: Right click the device, click Properties. Go to 'Details' and change the drop down to Compatible IDs.
Take the top line and Google it. Now you should be able to see what device it is by the search results. Go the that manufacturers website and download the newest driver.

Go to son's website and download the drivers for the wireless and chipset. The chipset should take care of 2 of them, if not let me know.

I just went to Sony's website. When I typed in the model number (VPCF12Z1E) I was taken to their European site. There, I did not understand the language, so could not proceed further.

My laptop was a gift from a music collaborator/friend of mine, who lives in the Netherlands. I guess I will have to let him know what I need, and maybe HE can download it, and send me the files.

Hopefully, anyway.

Hey John, man - I am STRAIGHT now :).

I can't BELIEVE that my laptop is acting like a champ, now - and it is all because of you. I know that there were some others who had chimed in, to try and help me out, and I appreciate them also. But I cannot thank you enough.

Now, it is about finding a good, reliable Anti-Virus program - before I start to REALLY putting this laptop to the web searching task. I had been informed that my previous situation had been virus related, especially when I had revealed that the Anti-Virus program I had been using was AVG FREE. It was suggested that I pick up McAfee, and I wanted to know what your feelings were on this software - or ANY Anti- Virus program that you might feel would be even better.

Again - many, MANY thanks for coming to my aid.
 
No antivirus program is full proof, a program is only as good as its defintion database. For most people free programs work wonders, Avast is what I use. But then again, I know how to surf safely and not open any weird emails. I do recommend staying away from AVG though. It used to be good back in version 9 which was a quite a few years ago, but it has lacked recently. Mcafee and Nortons are resource hogs, stay away from them. I hear Comodo and Bitdefender are good, both are free.
