Screen saver wont stay off!

The time to wait for the screen saver in the display properties menu won’t stay. I enter in 999 minutes because I dont want it to come on and almost every time I restart the computer it goes back to 1 minute.

I never use screen savers so "none" may be the preferred option there. When setting the time are you remembering to click the apply button? If not the next system restart will automatically reset the default time.

I thought the only difference between ok and apply is apply makes the changes as soon as you click apply so you can see if you like the changes before you exit, and ok makes the changes upon exit. That has to be it because I always change my desktop resolution and when I change it I just click ok not apply, and when I reboot the desktop is still in the resolution I selected.

Ok. Go to your start menu and go to run. type in regedit. This is your registry. Do not play with anything else in there except what im about to tell you. go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER then go to Control panel(in reg edit not the control panel in windows) go down to Desktop and then look under where it says screensaveactive. The number next to that should be a 1. Right click on it and go to modify and change that parameter to 0. the two before it and the one after it should also have 0's after them. Then just exit, restart and see if its worked. The 0 in the screensaveactive makes your screen saver none, which the way you say your doing it doesnt work, so editing the registry should work. Good luck tell us how it goes!

You will have to be far more specific then that to instruct how to get into the correct "hive" in order to locate the correct key for this. The following screen shot will illustrate just where to look along with the directions to go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER>control panel>desktop". But you first have to type "regedit" in at the Run prompt found right off of the Start menu and press enter to open up the registry screen. Once you locate the correct value highlight it and go to the "edit" dropdown menu and click on the "modify" link to change the value from 1 to 0 if you find it set to 1.

Did you know? kelleys-korner-xp.com has a free download for enabling and disabling the screensaver function on XP systems? #51 on the left side at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm is another option.

The system registry is one place you don't want to make...ut ohs  s! I make edits quite often and know how to get back in to see any goofs corrected but... any time you start making changes you more or less do it at "your own risk"! Backing up the registry is one good practice before actually making them just in case...? uuuuu bouy i goofed somewhere!

One rather lengthy explaination on how to go about backing up the registry and the types of backups you can make is seen at http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_xp_registry.htm Microsoft also has their articles for using the system backup utility as well as a guide you can download seen at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322756 The image here shows how to use the automatic creation of a restore point if you don't have the NTBackup utility installed. http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3010/registrybackupjs1.jpg

I also edit my registry quite often or add things in, i guess i am just so used to it i failed to realize that some people dont know exactly what i am talking about! lol, next time ill think that who im talking to doesnt know anything, although im sure audio isnt computer stupid.

Despite having been inside the XP registry countless times you'll still find yourself a "newbie" for sure when trying it in Vista. Everything looks the same but....? things fall under different names there. The pctools site did have a free registry guide you could download at one time. While the online guide is still seen at the site for tweaks and repairs I image that the download disappeared due to Vista's arrival. The other place loaded with downloads and guides for different tweaks and repairs on XP is seen at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

There are some big changes made besides appearance and styles with Vista. Certain options like changing the way users log on and off is no longer found. when you double clck on a zip file it opens right up with WinZip or another program. There's a new media center you have the option to install by double clicking on the setup option as well as the full version of the Windows Defender that replaced the MS AntiSpyware Remover that has been out for some time now.

Besides the builtin firewall like seen in XP and the W.Defender what else can go wrong? Try the new user account control feature! When first installed here after finding a way to get rid of the new sidebar "everything" saw a prompt to allow, deny, or end program or installer. Talk about going past a firewall that was real annoying! You simply uncheck that item and proceed on.

When a program crashes now and you press ctrl-alt-del you suddenly see a new screen come up with several options like locking the system, shutting down, logging off, or using the task manager. As soon as the task manager option is selected and that opens your game or whatever program suddenly disappears leaving the task manager and a prompt to end program seen.

looks like i have a lot to look forward to when i receive my new system. Has internet explorer 7 been updated any? Is the security enough to not have any anti virus if you know what to stay away from? Outlook express changed any? Can you do a screen shot of the login screen or explain it?

IE 7 remains very the same in Appearance while Vista now sees "Windows Mail" instead of Outllook Express. The default security settings are higher then seen in IE 6 resulting in coming across far fewer "invalid garbage sites" where trojans and other crap is copied onto your system. I haven't even seen anything but the typical tracking cookies that Ad-Aware dusts off since the final version was released. It still installs Outlook the same way while the browser part has seen some good improvements there.
