Screwed it up!

So I was cleaning a buddies case out and I hooked my old LCD 15 inch up to test it...it worked just dandy so he took it home.

Well now the PC will boot to safe mode (and it works) and will boot up normally and get to windows logo but after that the screen goes into hibernation.

I tried disabling all MS services and Boot up services.
I replaced the VGA to DVI adapter.
I took the 7600GT out and cleaned it
Took the memory out and put it back in.
I tried "booting up with last known configuration" and I tried resetting the "optimized defaults" on his Gateway.

It worked with the LCD....but now it wont work on his CRT. It will boot into safe mode though.

Not sure what to do now...anyone have any ideas? I want to avoid formatting his system since he has like 2000 games of Hearts and is trying to beat his old mans record. He really wants to avoid the format.

If that's the only reason you don't want to reformat then put the saved games on a thumb drive. If someone comes up with a fix than great but I kind of doubt anyone will. And if they do I'll get to learn something.

Where does Microsoft keep the statistics for their games?

Windows XP. Also I am not 100% sure a format will fix it....I think it will but could just be a waste of time.

Well I'm not quite sure where to find the data but if you search through all the program files associated with the game you should be able to find it. While reformatting will probably fix it you should try some other fixes first since I am very reformat happy. But if you don't mind a couple hours to fix the problem and make the comp run faster then just do what I would do.

Try reinstalling the video card drivers, or try running it without the video card. I was upgrading a computer from an 8 series card to a 9 series card and I didn't uninstall the 8 series drivers correctly. When I restarted, the card had no drivers, but it still displayed at the monitor's native resolution. It said that the resolution was out of range and the monitor would go to sleep every couple of minutes. When I properly installed the new drivers it stopped sleeping.

I think a driver problem is pretty unlikely. I've installed ATI -->nVidia and vise versa without even uninstalling the previous driver and I've never had problems. While it's worth trying I don't have hopes for it working. I still hold that a reformat is the best option... It not only solve this problem but it will also make the computer run faster.

Well I didn't do anything to his PC though...no driver updates or anything. I just tornado the inside of his case...used a LCD to to make sure there was no issues and then booted down. Nothing changed with his configuration from when I got it and the problem happened.

I will try the reinstall of the drivers though when he comes over today.

I'd say uninstal the display driver in safe mode, then boot it up again, starting in normal mode.
its starting up windows, and normally after the windows loge (with the loading bar etc) the display driver takes over. seeing as the screen goes black at this point does suggest the display driver is trying to show a resolution or refresh rate the monitor cant cope with.
ofc, can't say for sure thats it, but its the most logical explanation I have at the moment. :o

Yeah it fixed it :)

Finally....though now his AVG firewall refuses to activate and has maleware on his PC. Should be a simple re-install with luck.

Least its fixed thanks guys and Arch :P
