Scrolling desktop

i have a friend who just got a CRT and he plugged it in and it works and everything only one problem. if he set the resolution anything above 1024x768, it would change but instead of giving him the full res it would look all big and if he pushed his mouse to the edge, it would scroll to show the rest of the screen.
any suggestions? i told him to reduce the refresh rate to 60hz and unplug the LCD he had (whose max res is 1024x768) but it still stays like that.

That sounds more like the screen resolution is going lower then higher where objects like the normally seen icons somehow grow in size. The video card itself probably switches to a low end resulution less then the standard vga 640x480. What make and model card is that? It sounds like an older AGP 1x/2x/4x card being used.

Are the drivers loaded and working correctly? Same with the monitor. Last time I had this happen with with my OOOLD 486 laptop. The LCD couldn't go beyond 640x480. Anything higher would scroll around. However, using external monitors, I could go to 800x600...

It sounds more like the drivers were for a different model or the card itself has a problem. I think even the early PCI-E models supported at least one or two higher resolutions. The other thing you mentioned was telling your friend to unplug the other lcd monitor? Was this on a dual monitor setup?

Well originally he tried to put the CRT he was given with his current LCD, he tried to change the res of the CRT but it did the whole scrolling thing. I told him to unplug the LCD because it may somehow be interfering with the CRTs resolution but it still wouldn't work. When I ended the conversation last night he was downloading the newest Catalyst drivers so when I get in touch with him I'll check with him.

The card is not AGP, it is PCI-Express...

If you set the resolution over the maximum resolution of the monitor, it will scroll around. That could be the issue with your friend. Is his monitor 15"?

the CRT is 17" the LCD is 15" which is why I thought the max res of the LCD could somehow be affecting the CRT. CRTs should not max out at 1024x768 though...

after a bit of chatting i figured the CRT just maxes out at that res, he had to uncheck the box to display more resolutions than supported, I've never seen a CRT max out at that though but thats prolly y it was free for him.

You will find that a good number of older style crts will max at 1024x768. That's not any surprize there. Many small lcds are the same way especially the few 14" models that are now pretty much gone from most vendors lists. With a dual monitor setup especially when extending the desktop you would want both at the same resolution anyways.
