SD Memory cards

thanks for replying,

Any clue to how many photos i could get on a 512Mb card?
or would i be better getting a 1Gb?

Just over 200 high quality JPEG's with a 5 mega pixel camera, but it does vary.

that would be great if it holds around 200 photos,I cant see us needing any more space than 512Mb if it does.

But if we can get a good deal on a 1GB card then we may get 1GB.

Thanks for your replies :)

Well my 6MP camera on highest quality can store about 700 photos on a 2GB card.

I don't know about the UK, but here a 2GB card is not much more then a 512MB.

well the 512Mb card is £9.99 and the 1Gb £24.99,Also the 2Gb is now £24.99 because its on Promotion:)

i might just get the 2Gb lol if they have any in stock :)

Compression rates vary among cameras. My old Kodak 5MP camera can fit more pictures on a card than my Panasonic 5MP. Both are on the highest quality setting...

Also, I always suggest getting mid-priced cards rather than the cheapest you can find. I've had some bad luck with cheap cards, and even heard of some totally dying over time. Of course that also resulted in pictures being lost... Actually my main cards are all Panasonic now.

well this is the cheapest i can find,However it does have a 5-year warranty;)

will i need a card reader to read the photos off it or can i just transfer the photos onto my pc using the USB cable they gave me with the camera?

i tried the camera with a few pics because it has 16Mb memory built in and i could transfer the photos streight from the camera to my pc via that lead but i was just wondering if it would be diffrent with the card :confused:or would it work the same way?

Nah, you could just plug your camera in :)

Space is all well and good, but write speed is something you've got to take into consideration.

If you get a cheap 2GB SD card, the write speed may be really low, meaning that you'll take a picture and it could take 5 seconds before it's even saved, this will stop you taking pictures quickly, for stuff like action, or if there's some thing you'll only get a couple of shots at, like an animal.

I have two 1GB Sandisk Ultra II's and they're great, put it on the burst setting on the camera and you get a stream of pictures, not time spent waiting!

Look at this, it's cheaper, and it's miles better!

Faster write speed means less time between shots (Minimum of 9MB/Second write speed and 10MB/second read speed!).

You could take as many pictures as you want, as fast as you want :D

Hope this helps :)

you would actuall be better getting 4 512 mb cards than 1 2gb
coz i 1 dies you have lost less money and if the 2GB has an error you will loose 2GB of photos but if you do it the other way you will only loose 512mb of photo's
(speaking from experience)
and a 512mb card will hold about 204 images depending on the camera settings at the time
iso and aperture and the amount of information in the shot (colour and light)

hey danny alright,

thats great,I thought you could but i just wanted to make sure.

thats a great deal on the 2GB card but i dont want to buy online unfortunately.

the write speed doesnt realy bother me that much because we will only be taking photos of like the family when we go on holiday and some pictures of places in Cyprus etc.

the camera i have already has 16Mb built in memory and it takes a few seconds to for it to save the image to that anyway :)

the camera isnt nothing special obviusly,Its just ALOT better than the old film type we had before:D

just wondering

Alright Shane,

Oh right, Well, if you don't want to buy online, take a look in shops like Jessops and see if they sell them?

Anyway, at least you finally got a camera :P
