So I have been working in the tech field for sometime and I know about the problems with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB drives going into brick mode. I wanted to buy two of them because from what I knew about their problem was that it's a firmware problem with the drives and that's why they go into brick mode in a few months? Now if I buy them and update their firmware from seagate's website I should be good then and no more brick modes?

Honestly...i wouldnt even consider purchasing 7200.11 drives at this point in time. In addition to the firmware issues, they also had a ton of mechanical failures that plagued them. Stick with the 7200.12 drives, Western Digital Caviar Blacks, or Spinpoint F3 line from Samsung.

Thanks! Yeah I was working in the tech field a while ago and I knew about the problems of them going into brick mode. I was told by the other techs that it was because of the firmware and that Seagate had issued an update for them. Basically they said that you could buy them but you had to immediately update the firmware on them before doing anything else. I thought that Seagate had fixed the problem with them? I didn't know they had other mechanical problems in that model. Good thing I still have been going with the 7200.12 models.

I was planning on putting them in a mirroring raid mode. I figured it would be a cheap fix if one died. But I don't think I would like to replace drives every 4 months. haha

Well, right now the 7200.11 drives really aren't that much cheaper than the newer 7200.12 drives, or the Samsung/Western Digital drives(The spinpoint F3 1TB can be had for $59.99 every couple weeks from newegg). Not to mention, the caviar black, Spinpoint F3, and 7200.12 are all faster than the 7200.11 drives.

I found them for $29 at newegg. I know they are recertified and that was why I wanted to ask some questions about the bricking. I think newegg is being smart trying to dump those drives.

Definitely stay away from the 7200.11's. I wouldn't even accept one for free. Whatever data you put on there I'm sure is worth more to you than the extra $20 you would have spent getting a 7200.12 or a Spinpoint F3.
